The then-boyfriend and I couldn't have known it in '87 of course, but it wasn't just that we had a favorite Italian restaurant (where we did not drink wine, being clean-living teens), but this would end up being our song more than we realized. We didn't buy a waterbed or even paintings from Sears, but we got married too young and the money got tight (although, oddly, we didn't really fight), and we just didn't count on the tears. We got a divorce as a matter of course, and parted as the closest of friends. We weren't greasers or popular steadies, but yep, as in "Allentown," this is weirdly my story as well as "Brender & Eddie's."
It is also a sweet suite, as Billy goes from piano-bar to jazz rock, to hard rock and, yes, proto-"Allentown" sound. It is a great song, even if it's not about you.
