I am so old that when I first heard of Adam Ant, I thought of the cartoon character Atom Ant, and so young that I didn't get the "adamant" pun of either until years later. I definitely did not buy this album at the time-- the title track is so raucous and ramshackle!-- but who of my generation did not know of "Goody Two Shoes"? (We'll get to that song on Side B.) Today, I hear early '60s touches, like the Twist and doo-wop, and those crazy drums wouldn't have sounded out of place in surf music, but this is also as far out on the punk side of New Wave as my tastes go. I can't even imagine what Ant's first solo album sounded like to people older and hipper than that little Californian freshman girl. But within a decade, I'd become an admirer and I'd buy this used album for $7.99.
