First of all, I don't pretend that my musical collection is representative of '60s music or even fully of my taste in '60s music. This'll just be the Top Forty of the 1960s music I've played these past few months, and I will revise the list if and when I come across more worthy entries. The ranking is somewhat arbitrary, but here you are:
- "The End" by the Beatles, the only A- so far, an easy call
- "We Can Work It Out" by the Beatles
- "I'm Only Sleeping" by the Beatles
- "Baby You're a Rich Man" by the Beatles
- "A Simple Desultory Philippic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission)" by Simon & Garfunkel
- "So Long, Mom (A Song for World War III)" by Tom Lehrer
- "You Never Give Me Your Money" by the Beatles
- "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" by the Beatles
- "Get Back" by the Beatles
- "The Word" by the Beatles
- "Homeward Bound" by Simon & Garfunkel
- "Good Morning Good Morning" by the Beatles
- "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by the Beatles
- "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills and Nash
- "Hand Me Down World" by the Guess Who
- "Come Together" by the Beatles
- "Hey Jude" by the Beatles
- "I'm So Tired" by the Beatles
- "Baby You Can Drive My Car" by the Beatles (the top of the B's)
- "Lovely Rita" by the Beatles
- "Money" by the Beatles
- "Help" by the Beatles
- " 'Über Dubbing Over Alice' ('Arry 'N' Friends)" by the Firesign Theatre
- "The Vatican Rag" by Tom Lehrer
- "Smut" by Tom Lehrer
- "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles
- "Day Tripper" by the Beatles
- "She Loves You" by the Beatles
- "I Am the Walrus" by the Beatles
- "All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles
- "Can't Buy Me Love" by the Beatles
- "Don'tcha Hear Me Callin' To Ya" by the Fifth Dimension
- "Julia" by the Beatles
- "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians
- "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon & Garfunkel
- "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by the Beatles
- "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by the Beatles
- "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)" by Simon & Garfunkel
- "Penny Lane" by the Beatles
- "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" by the Guess Who
You can see why I didn't do a separate post on the Beatles. There are other songs and sounds that got a B grade, but I had to narrow it down somehow.
ETA 12/30/20: The Zombies' 1968 "Time of the Season," on a mix-tape, earns a B+, and I'm putting it at Number 15, thus pushing "No Sugar" out of the Top 40.
ETA 12/31/20: The Zombies strike again, on a different mix-tape, with "Come On Time" (1965) a B+ that lands at Number 12. Sorry, "Penny Lane."
