Remember how "Stiletto" didn't work? Well, here's another very bitter love song*, and Joel has chosen to treat it like a Nilsson composition, providing his own back-up, like he's both John & Paul in the Abbey Road era. So there's poison, addiction, co-dependency, f-bombs, etc., and lovely oos and ahs, and, yep, another man = machine early '80s equation. And it works.
*Possibly about his mother though, with an "umbilical cord."
