Not only awkward but also sounds like it belongs on the soundtrack of a big-screen soap opera.  (I thought of Mahogany, although I'm not sure how accurate that is since I haven't seen the movie since the time.)  Oddly enough, a few years later David Gates would do the theme to The Goodbye Girl, which I still have a soft spot, although it's a bit awkward now that I think about it.  If I had that on a single, I would keep it.  But since this song is actually longer than the first three on Side One, the average is C, so it goes in the discard pile.
